Yes, Animals Feel and Think – The Economist

“Charles Darwin thought the mental capacities of animals and people differed only in degree, not kind—a natural conclusion to reach when armed with the radical new belief that the one evolved from the other. His last great book, “The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals”, examined joy, love and grief in birds, domestic animals and primates as well as in various human races. But Darwin’s attitude to animals—easily shared by people in everyday contact with dogs, horses, even mice—ran contrary to a long tradition in European thought which held that animals had no minds at all…

…Off Laguna, in southern Brazil, people and bottlenose dolphins have fished together for generations. The dolphins swim towards the beach, driving mullet towards the fishermen. The men wait for a signal from the dolphins—a distinctive dive—before throwing their nets. The dolphins are in charge, initiating the herding and giving the vital signal, though only some do this. The people must learn which dolphins will herd the fish and pay close attention to the signal, or the fishing will fail. Both groups of mammals must learn the necessary skills. Among the humans, these are passed down from father to son; among the dolphins, from mother to calf. In this example, how much do the species differ?”

EXTRAORDINARY – DashCam Live Videos During Fukishima Tsunami

Extraordinary Video With More Footage and Details On Recovering the Footage From the Badly Damaged Dashboard Camera With Subtitles

This is probably one of the most extraordinary live Fukishima videos ever captured while tsunami waters engulf the streets of Senda minutes after the devastating 8.9 Japan Earthquake.

In the first minute of this video, you will see the incredible shaking of the street and buildings, almost as if the landscape is on a platform of rubber. The back and forth movement is huge. Buildings sway, cars bounce, streets rise and fall.

One man crouches and reels in an attempt to keep his balance. The video skips to an hour later when the rushing waters hit without warning.

Mr. Muroga, a delivery driver who has a security dashcam installed in his vehicle, was making a delivery through Sendai’s Miyagino-ku when the March 2011 Japan Earthquake struck. Since he was over a kilometer away from the ocean, he and others mistakenly assumed they were safe from any resulting floodwaters.

Out of nowhere, you can see a torrent of rushing water start to rush across the intersection several blocks ahead. One passenger leaps from his car to the right. He doesn’t know where to run.

Suddenly, within seconds, waters rise from behind. Frantic drivers have no time to leave their vehicles and they begin to float. You can see the auto headlights beaming and windshield wipers swishing back and forth while cars, vans and trucks bob and float in the rapidly rising water filled with debris.

MIRACLE SURVIVAL

If there is ANYTHING amazing and beautiful about this video, it is that Mr. Muroga was able to leap from his vehicle and swam to safety. Within minutes, you can see his vehicle pummeled as it’s swept into a warehouse where it is then crushed and overcome in a wave of metal, water and darkness. At one point while still in his vehicle, Mr. Muroga had briefly hoped the flood waters would recede and he could be saved.

Mr. Muroga wants everyone to see the extraordinary power and devastation of a tidal wave that can overcome a city without warning. He reports that there was no noise, no warning whatsoever. It was truly a silent killer. His message:

Watch the video and see how important it is to leave your vehicle and seek higher ground during a tidal wave. If there are any coastal earthquakes, be aware of tsunamis even if you over a kilometer distant from the sea.

Dog, Man and Heaven

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them… con’d >>

Katrinka - Unfailing, Lifelong friend - Dog is Man's Best Friend

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate of pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, “Excuse me, where are we?”

“This is Heaven, sir,” the man answered. “Wow! Would you happen to have some water?” the man asked.

Of course, sir. Come right in, and I”ll have some ice water brought right up.”The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

“Can my friend,” gesturing toward his dog, “come in, too?” the traveler asked.

“I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.”

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

“Excuse me!” he called to the man. “Do you have any water?”

“Why sure, there”s a pump over there, come on in.”

“How about my friend here?” the traveler gestured to the dog.

“There should be a bowl by the pump.”

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl for the dog and took a long drink himself. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

“What do you call this place?” the traveler asked.

“This is Heaven,” he answered.

“Well, that’s confusing,” the traveler said. “The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.”

“Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That”s hell.”

“Doesn’t it make you mad for them to use your name like that?”

“No, we’re just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.”

THE BEAUTIFUL TRUTH – Dr. Max Gerson

Beautiful movie with a beautiful message and revealing truths. Yes, there IS a cure for cancer that was developed by Dr. Max Gerson. So many people have been cured using his method. Unfortunately, the 100 billion dollar cancer industry continues to dismiss his real cure. There is a nobility of spirit in some people who risk everything to share their Beautiful Truth.

From the Movie:

Live A Life That Matters…

What Will Matter Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.

All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.

It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

It won’t matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end.

It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.

Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave?

What will matter is not your success, but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character.

What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone.

What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.

What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters.

SOLDIER AND BABY – Powerful Powerful Image

A Soldier Weeps While Holding
a Dead Baby in His Arms
An extraordinarily heartbreaking picture of an unknown soldier holding a dead baby close to his heart, emotionally overwrought. No… this is not an amazing nor beautiful picture… but then perhaps the truly beautiful, amazing, wondrous thing might be how this picture shows us another truth and reality that we might have missed while struggling through our daily routines.

Soldier and Baby - Powerful, Powerful Image

This is a particular moving image depicting the devastating consequences of war. I do not have the details about this particular image, only that it caused great grief when i first saw it in an email. But then, any pictures of dead children are devastating in scope.

Evidently this soldier is deeply moved by the death of this little baby. He will never forget this little child and this moment will likely haunt him for the rest of his days. He seems to be a soldier of great love, caring and courage. Hopefully he will go on to find a truly hopeful and peaceful way to reconcile the things he has born witness to.

The baby is so completely innocent in all of this. One day laughing, smiling, patting little hands together, the next day terrified, killed, then held in a bloody blanket by a stranger. But the stranger weeps for him or her… as do we all.

If anyone has any details about this image, please let me know.

Thanks to Kitt for sending : )
